Short Link:
On Sunday, 24 August 2008, around 7:00am, students affiliated with the Islamic Bloc at Al-Azhar University stormed into and took control over an asbestos-floored ground room belonging to the secretary of the University's Continuing Education Department.
The room belongs to the University's Student Council.
Some of those students were armed with handguns and batons.
They were in civilian clothes inside the university premises to support the Islamic Bloc's students which created tension.
At around 8:30 am students of Fateh Shabibah, on the one hand, and others of the Islamic Bloc, on the other hand, had heated arguments that led to a quarrel inside the premises.
A number of university students attacked those students fortified inside the room in question.
At that moment, the Bloc's students made a few phone calls and a number of gunmen in civilian clothes with AK-47 rifles arrived at the scene.
Then, the clashes diminished.
The University's administration used speakers to call students inside the premises to evacuate because there were students taking summer term final exams.
Later, around 20 policemen arrived at the University and broke up the clashes.
They evacuated the University's premises and returned a personal computer that a few students took but didn't leave the premises with it yet.
The University's administration cancelled the third part exams of the same day which start at 1:00pm.
It also cancelled the exams of Monday, 25 August 2008 in order to prevent any anticipated clashes among students.
