Al Mezan Center for Human Rights is highly concerned by the escalation of human rights violations by the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF), which has left four Palestinians and 21 injured in an extra-judicial assassination in Gaza city and two others in incursions in eastern Gaza city and the town of Beit Hanoun yesterday.
An IOF drone fired a missile at a can in the Shaja'iyeh neighborhood east of Gaza city yesterday, 20 November 2006.
Two Palestinians were killed in the car: Abdul Qader Habib, aged 27, and Basil Ubaid, aged 27, and four passers-by were injured.
At app.
2am on 21 November 2006 IOF ground forces stormed into the Zeitoun neighborhood in the south of Gaza city.
Troops took positions in the east aide of the area and rounded the house of Ayman Hassanein.
Using loudspeakers, they ordered him to surrender himself but he refused and exchanged fire with the force.
Hassanein himself was killed and a 70-year-old woman was also killed inside her nearby house from IOF fire.
Five other Palestinians were injured.
IOF left the area at 7:30 am, but only after destroying roads and an electricity transformer.
At 7:30 on the same day, IOF launched another incursion near Beit Hanoun's industrial zone and rounded all the area between it and the Shuhada Cemetery, east of Jabalia.
At 8:10am, a tank fired a shell hitting the house of Zahir Khadir.
The house was damaged but no casualties were reported.
IOF also fired a missile that hit an area near the American School in Beit Lahia.
No casualties were reported.
On Tuesday 21 November, 10 Israeli tanks and armored vehicles entered the Abu Safiyeh neighborhood and the industrial zone south of Beit Hanoun.
At the same time, app.
6:30am, some 30 armored vehicles entered the eastern part of Jabalia.
Soldiers broke into several houses and used them for watch and snipers' fire.
IOF fired several tank shells and missiles, of which three hit the house of Abu Hassan Ahmed.
12 Palestinians were injured from IOF fire and shelling in these areas, including 7 children.
One child, Nadir Ahmed, was critically injured from a live bullet in the head.
Meanwhile, IOF tanks have continued their incursion around the evacuated settlements north of the Beit Hanoun close to the northern border of the Gaza Strip for the fourth day.
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights is gravely concerned about the continued incursions and use of excessive force by IOF in densely populated areas.
The Center reiterates its strong condemnation of the extra-judicial assassinations IOF carry out in Gaza.
These practices have always caused death and suffering to civilians.
The Center has also detected many cases where IOF has willfully killed innocent civilians; especially during incursions.
The Center believes that the current reaction on the part of the international community has only encouraged such practices and, hence, calls upon it to effectively intervene to ensure Israel's compliance with IHL and human rights norms in its treatment of the civilian population under its occupation in Gaza.
The Center also calls for urgent international protection for these civilians.
