Israel Escalates Its Genocidal Campaign in Gaza, Killing 21 Palestinians, Including 5 Children and 2 Women, Within 48 Hours
28 May 2026
Short Link:
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights strongly condemns the continued escalation by Israeli occupation forces of grave violations against civilians in the Gaza Strip, coinciding with the Eid al-Adha holiday. During the past 48 hours, these attacks have resulted in the killing of 21 Palestinians and the injury of dozens more, including 10 civilians who were killed in a nighttime airstrike targeting a residential home near Al-Israa Tower on Omar Al-Mukhtar Street in central Gaza City.
These attacks reflect an accelerated expansion in the systematic targeting of civilians and the perpetration of mass atrocities within the context of the ongoing genocidal campaign against the Palestinian population in Gaza, raising serious concerns over the likelihood of further civilian casualties and the continued escalation of large-scale massacres.
According to field information, 10 civilians, including 5 children and 2 women, were killed and several others injured at approximately 10:31 PM on Wednesday, 28 May 2026, when Israeli warplanes targeted a residential house near Al-Israa Tower, adjacent to the Municipal Park in central Gaza City. A number of those killed were displaced persons residing in tents surrounding the targeted building.
A resident of Gaza City living near the site of the attack stated:
“On the first day of Eid al-Adha, at approximately 10:00 PM, Israeli occupation forces bombed a residential apartment located in a nearby building adjacent to the municipal park. We heard powerful explosions and saw flames rising from the apartment. The fire continued burning for a prolonged period, and part of the targeted building collapsed onto the tents surrounding it.”
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, since the entry into force of the ceasefire agreement, Israeli occupation forces have killed 910 Palestinians and injured 2,747 others with varying degrees of injuries.
The timing and nature of these attacks, particularly the targeting of residential homes and displacement tents during nighttime hours when families are gathered inside, demonstrate a clear intent to inflict the highest possible number of civilian casualties, including among children and women. Furthermore, the repeated targeting of densely populated residential areas reflects a deliberate policy aimed at maximizing human loss, spreading terror among the civilian population, and accelerating the destruction of what remains of homes, neighborhoods, and urban infrastructure throughout the Gaza Strip, reducing entire areas to rubble and ashes.
According to the OCHA Humanitarian Situation Report issued on 25 May 2026, The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains critical, with many displaced families continuing to shelter in overcrowded tents, schools, or damaged structures due to the lack of safe alternatives. Access to essential services also remains severely constrained, including limited availability of clean water and inadequate waste management systems that are unable to effectively address growing public health risks, including the spread of pests and rodents. Many residential areas across Gaza remain unsafe and exposed to recurrent strikes, shelling, and shooting incidents in or near populated areas.
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights unequivocally condemns the ongoing Israeli crimes, including the targeting of homes, displacement tents, and civilian gatherings, as well as the deliberate exacerbation of humanitarian and health conditions as a form of collective punishment and an integral component of the ongoing genocide against the Palestinian population in Gaza.
The Center further warns that the continued silence of the international community and the absence of urgent and effective intervention to halt these crimes constitute implicit acquiescence to the continuation of genocide against innocent civilians.
Accordingly, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights calls upon the international community to undertake immediate and effective measures to pressure Israeli occupation forces to cease all military attacks against civilians and civilian property, open all border crossings immediately and unconditionally, and ensure the unrestricted entry of humanitarian aid, fuel, medicines, medical equipment, and all essential supplies indispensable to the survival of Gaza’s civilian population.
