At 4:30pm on Friday, 7 September 2018, Israeli forces located to the east of the fence in east Burij refugee camp in east Middle Area district used live ammunition and tear-gas canisters on hundreds of Palestinians who joined the Great Return March demonstration in east Burij. 21 demonstrators, including seven children, were injured in the Israeli shooting. Demonstrators injured by live ammunition and those directly hit by tear-gas canisters totaled 16, of them five children. Casualties ranged in severity from light to serious. Other demonstrators who suffered from breathing difficulties due to Israeli forces’ heavy use of tear gas received the necessary treatment by field-based medical teams. The Israeli shooting continued until 8pm on the same day.
