Seventeen-year-old Iyad from Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip was a distinct child. He was a jokester and loved telling his friends funny tales. He was very kind. He always helped his mother in her housework. He loved playing football. His ambition was to get a good job and to build himself a bright future. “He used to take care of his grandfather who was sick,” his mother, Wafaa, 38, said.
On 21 July 2014, when Iyad was on his way to his grandfather’s house, an Israeli shell hit near him on the street. The shell sprayed shrapnel into different parts of Iyad’s body. He was instantly killed.
