Short Link:
On Friday 22 January 2011, relatives of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli prisons blocked the French Foreign Minister, Michele Alliot-Marie, from entering the Gaza Strip.
The Minister was on her way to the Gaza Strip and was approaching the Customs Checkpoint on the Salah Ad-Din Street when the protesters blocked her convoy.
Some of them jumped on the vehicle that carried her and others lying on the road.
Many protestors attacked the convoy by hands and shoes.
The police and security guards intervened and cleared the way for the French FM.
The Wa'ed Association for Prisoners organized a sit-in for relatives of Palestinian prisoners at the Customs Checkpoint.
Protestors held signs against statements that the French FM allegedly had made; including a condemnation of the holding the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit in captivity.
' They also held that Minster ignored the suffering of thousands of Palestinians who are imprisoned in Israeli prisons.
The Minister also visited the Al Quds Hospital in Gaza, a hospital that was destroyed by the Israeli army in January 2009, and similar protests occurred.
The Minister and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs made statements clarifying that the Minister was mis-quoted and had not made such statements in Israel
