Short Link:
On the evening of Tuesday 8 April 2003, Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) perpetrated a new assassination crime as Israeli Apaches fired several missiles on a car in the city of Gaza.
Israel said the target was Hamas activists.
As a result, seven people were killed and about 53 wounded.
This includes 22 children.
According to the findings of Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, at around 8:10 pm yesterday, Tuesday 8 April 2003, Israeli helicopters fired four missiles on a car in Asqula neighborhood in Gaza City.
At the same time Israeli warplanes and helicopters were clearly seen flying on the area.
Eyewitnesses said that the car was hit by missiles and after about twenty minutes from the first strike, the car was hit by another two missiles.
In the second strike people were crowded around the car trying to help the wounded.
Following are the names and ages of the people who were killed in the attack:
Sa’d Msa’id al-Arabeed, aged 35;
Ashraf Abdul Rahman al-Halabi, aged 25;
Ammar Kamil Nassar, aged 22;
Muhammad Sabir Basal, aged 20;
Mahmud Samir Farwana, aged 30;
Ahmad Khamis al-Ashram, aged 13;
Samy Hasan Qasim, aged 16.
Medical sources in ash-Shifa Hospital reported that there are five people who sustained very critical wounds in the incident.
In addition, several homes and two metal shops were damaged from the explosion of the missiles.
At around 6 am Wednesday 9 April 2003, about 20 Israeli tanks and armored personnel carrier vehicles invaded the Salah ad-Din Street and reached the entrance of Beit Hanoun, north of the Gaza Strip.
until the moment of drafting this release IOF have been firing the area and three Palestinians have been killed; they are:
Imad Adnan al-Hindi, aged 21;
Ali Hussain al-Mashirfa, aged 36;
Ahmad Rashad Abu al-Qumsan, aged 16.
Another ten people were also wounded in this attack, most of whom are children.
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights condemns the Israeli crimes, which adds new evidence that IOF deliberately target civilians’ life.
The firing of missiles into a crowd of civilians twenty minutes after shelling a car makes this clear.
The Center is gravely concerned by Israel’s continued Israeli crimes in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT).
The targeting of civilians with air strikes causes much loss in life and property and constitutes war crimes under the international humanitarian law.
As such, Al Mezan calls upon the international community to:
Fulfill its moral and legal responsibilities and put an end to Israel’s crimes in the OPT.
Provide urgent protection for the Palestinian civilians in the OPT.
Monitor the IOF’s acts in the OPT more closely, especially at this particular time as the world is focused on the war in Iraq.
