Short Link:
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights held the training workshop entitled 'International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and Protection of Civilians in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT)' for volunteer fieldworkers today at its Gaza City office.
The training is part of the Centre's 'Promotion of IHL and ESCR by Education in Gaza' project, supported by Diakonia.
Twenty-one Al Mezan fieldwork volunteers participated in the training, which aimed to raise participant awareness on IHL origins, principles, and content.
The training also included a section on applied IHL in times of armed conflict, particularly in the OPT, focusing on the special legal protections provided to civilians under occupation and mechanisms for accountability of grave violations of IHL perpetrated on the Palestinian people.
Workshop participants discussed IHL violations and Israeli war crimes in the recent Operation Cast Lead, as well as the legal status of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons and related IHL violations against detainees.
They also discussed strategies for documentation, using Al Mezan Centre methodology as a model.
