Gaza, 12 August 2025 – At approximately 11:20 p.m. on Sunday, 10 August 2025, Israeli forces carried out a targeted attack on a press tent belonging to Al Jazeera TV, located near the main gate of Al-Shifa Medical Complex in western Gaza City. According to information collected by Al Mezan’s field team, the attack killed seven civilians, including six journalists and media workers, and injured several others.

Five members of Al Jazeera's staff were killed: correspondents Anas Al-Sharif (28) and Mohammed Qreiqeh (33); camera operators Ibrahim Zaher (26) and Moamen Aliwa (24); and crew assistant Mohammed Nofal (30). Also killed were journalist Mohammed Al-Khaldi (39) and civilian bystander Saber Jundia (24). Among those injured was Al-Kofiya TV correspondent, Mohammed Soboh (37).

Journalist Saed Hasaballah, who witnessed the attack, told Al Mezan:

“At around 11:20 p.m., on Sunday, 10 August 2025, I was sitting inside a journalists’ tent in front of Al Shifa Hospital, where several tents belonging to various television channels and news agencies were set up. Suddenly, I heard a loud explosion. I rushed out of my tent to find that Al Jazeera's tent had been bombed and was engulfed in flames. Moments later, people began gathering in front of the targeted tent. I was in shock, knowing that my colleagues Anas Al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh had been inside. The most painful moment was seeing their lifeless bodies, along with other colleagues killed in the same strike. I now fear continuing in my profession, as Palestinian journalists are repeatedly targeted by Israeli forces.”

This is not the first time Israeli forces have targeted Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza. With this latest attack, the total number of the network's staff killed during the ongoing genocide has risen to at least ten. These include Al Jazeera’s Gaza bureau chief Wael Al-Dahdouh's son Hamza; cameraman Samer Abu Daqqa; correspondents Hossam Shabat and Ismail Al-Ghoul; and journalist Ahmed Al-Louh. Preceding most of these killings were intense campaigns of public threats, defamation, and incitement of violence against Al Jazeera correspondents by Israeli political and military officials. Anas Al-Sharif, one of the journalists killed on Sunday, was a target of one of these campaigns, underscoring the clear link between incitement and targeted attacks against journalists in Gaza.

Israeli forces continue to commit systematic crimes against Palestinian journalists to silence their reporting on the ongoing genocide. According to Palestinian authorities, Israeli forces have killed 238 journalists and media workers in Gaza since October 2023, the highest recorded number of journalism staff killed during a conflict. Journalists are attacked despite wearing clearly marked press identification on their vests, helmets, vehicles, and equipment. Israel’s deliberate targeting of civilian journalists and their reporting equipment constitutes war crimes under the Rome Statute and amounts to grave breaches of International Humanitarian Law.

Many journalists have had their homes, and the homes of their families, directly bombed, with no apparent justification other than to inflict maximum harm on them as part of a broader campaign to intimidate and punish journalists for their persistent reporting of the reality on the ground. Since October 2023, Israel has also banned international news outlets from entering Gaza, effectively obstructing widespread coverage of its crimes.

Al Mezan strongly condemns Israel’s ongoing crimes against Palestinian civilians in Gaza, particularly its illegal and systematic attacks on journalists. Al Mezan calls on the international community to act immediately to halt Israel’s ongoing genocide, end the inhumane conditions endured by Palestinians in Gaza, including journalists, and put an end to the suffering of more than two million Palestinians subjected to this continuing atrocity.

Furthermore, Al Mezan urges the International Criminal Court (ICC) to take urgent and effective steps to investigate Israel’s crimes, particularly those targeting Palestinian journalists, and to prosecute those responsible, including those who ordered such crimes. Al Mezan calls on all States Parties to the Rome Statute and the wider international community to fulfill their legal obligations by executing the arrest warrants issued by the Court in the context of its investigations into the Situation in the State of Palestine.

Finally, Al Mezan calls on journalists and media organizations worldwide to stand in solidarity with their Palestinian colleagues, to actively advocate for an end to the genocide, and to amplify coverage of Israel’s violations.
