On Monday, 22 Sept.
2008, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights organized a lecture on the International Humanitarian Law (IHL).
Twenty-one female students from the Shari'a and Law Faculty at the Islamic University attended the lecture, which is part of the activities under the ‘Promotion of the IHL and ESCR by Education in Gaza’ project in collaboration between Al Mezan and Diakonia.
The lecture aimed to raise awareness of the IHL, its sources, basic principles and content.
Participants learned about special protection that the IHL provides for civilians, during times of war and occupation.
During the lecture, the participants discussed the IHL violations committed by the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF).
They also discussed the applicability of the IHL on the Occupied Palestinian Territories and the legal status of the Palestinians held in the Israeli Prisons.
At the end, they stressed the significant role the international community should play as a party responsible for ensuring adequate protection of civilians under occupation and ensuring Israel's compliance with the principles of IHL.
