Al Mezan Calls to Abolish the Death Penalty and Stop the Use of the Revolutionary Penal Code

On Wednesday, 13 January 2016, the Permanent Military Court in Gaza city sentenced K.S., 58; A. G., 23 and his brothers, H. G., 31, and M. G., 28 from Gaza to death after being convicted of spying and cooperating with a hostile State. A. G. is being detained at the Al-Katiba prison in Gaza. The three other convicted persons are believed to have escaped to Israel. The judgment was issued in the presence of the first convicted person and in the absence of the others.

The accused were sentenced to death after being convicted of spying and cooperating with a hostile State in contravention of Article 131 of the Revolutionary Penal Code of 1979. Al Mezan Center for Human Rights expresses its deep concern for the continued use of the death penalty in Palestine despite the universal trend and need to abolish it and the presidential moratorium on its exceution.

Al Mezan reasserts its principled rejection of the issuance of death sentences. The death penalty does not deter crime and is cruel, inhumane and undignified. Al Mezan calls for a halt to the execution of the death penalty as a first step toward abolishing the practice by amending the relevant Palestinian laws to include other penalties. This step must be achieved as part of Palestinian internal reconciliation.
