The Israeli occupation authorities rejected on Sunday, 19 May 2013, a permit request for access to Ramallah via Erez Crossing for Mr.
Issam Younis, Director of Al Mezan Center for Human Rights (Al Mezan).
The permit request was submitted by the Independent Commission for Human Rights (ICHR).
Mr.
Younis is a member of ICHR's Council of Commissioners.
ICHR organized a press conference in Ramallah, West Bank, to present its annual report on the human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) and other internal meetings for its Council of Commissioners.
The Israeli authorities’ rejection of the request to grant Mr.
Younis a travel permit to access Ramallah on alleged security grounds was unveiled on Sunday in a response to the ICHR.
Mr.
Younis was subsequently prevented from taking part in the human rights focused events.
Israeli authorities have consistently blocked Mr.
Younis' travel since 2000.
This ban comes in a context of severe Israeli restrictions on movement imposed on the Gaza Strip; including on the movement of human rights defenders who are frequently denied access between Palestinian cities and banned from travel abroad.
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights condemns the Israeli authorities’ ban on the travel of Mr.
Younis and other human rights defenders.
Al Mezan calls on the international community to intervene and bring Israel's unlawful collective punishment measures on Palestinian civilians to an end, especially human rights defenders whose ability to play their role in promoting and defending human rights is hindered by such restrictions.
