Nine-year-old Tareq from the Northern Shokah area in Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip was an active and obedient child. He was an outstanding student at school. His mother could not afford to buy him any toys because of their economic hardships. His ambition was to be a lawyer in the future, just like his uncle. “I cry all the time, especially at night. Tareq was my soul,” says his mother Mariam, who is 34.
On 3 August 2014, Tareq and his family were in an UNRWA school shelter. Tareq was in the school yard when the school was targeted by an Israeli warplane, without prior warning. Many people were immediately killed including Tareq.
