Short Link:
At approximately 1:20 am on Thursday, March 2, 2004, a group of masked persons shot and killed 59-year-old Khalil Muhammad Al Zaben as he was leaving his office in the As-Sabra neighborhood of Gaza city .
According to an affidavit given to Al Mezan Center for Human Rights by an eyewitness, four masked persons appeared suddenly and one of them opened fire on Al Zaben and escaped in a car.
The victim was President Arafat’s aide for NGOs and Media affairs and was also editor of the Al Nashra periodical, which focuses on human rights issues.
This incident is the latest of a series of attacks against journalists and media institutions in the Gaza Strip, which reflects a clear absence of rule of law and opens the door to an unprecedented state of insecurity.
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights condemns the murder of Al Zaben and is highly concerned by the serious escalation of attacks on journalists and media figures, which threatens the human rights situation and the stability of the Gaza Strip.
Al Mezan, therefore, appeals to the Palestinian National Authority, which holds the responsibility for law enforcement, to initiate a serious and immediate investigation on this crime and to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The Center also calls for thorough investigations of all the previous attacks on Palestinian individuals and institutions.
Finally, the Center calls upon the Palestinian political and social institutions to act jointly to restore public order and rule of law for the Palestinian society.
