Al Mezan Opens Lawyer Training on the Detecting and Combating Torture in Gaza

On Sunday 7 November 2010, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights opened a specialized training course on ‘Lawyers Role in Detecting and Combating Torture’, held in Gaza City.
Twenty-five lawyers are participating in the course.
The training is part of a project that aims at combating torture implemented jointly by Al Mezan, Adalah and Physicians for Human Rights-Israel, and supported by the European Commission.
Al Mezan's director, Mr.
Issam Younis, opened the course and welcomed the participants and stressed the importance of raising lawyers' knowledge and sharpening their skills with respect to the crime of torture, torture methods, and the role of lawyers in detecting and combating torture.
Lawyer Waleed Ad-Dahnoun, the project lawyer, explained that the course aims to enhance lawyers' skills and knowledge of the Convention Against Torture (CAT) and the options for redress for victims of torture under Palestinian, Israeli and international law.
The course introduces participants to international humanitarian law and international criminal law, given that torture is included in the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.
The course consists of 30 hours to be delivered over five days by a team from Al Mezan trainers and experts from Palestinian universities and civil society.
