IOF Open Fire on Civilians Collecting Scrap and Rubble in the Vicinity of Erez Crossing

24 October 2011

At approximately 10:45 pm on Monday 24 October 2011, Israeli Occupation Force (IOF) opened fire on a number of Palestinian workers collecting scrap and rubble who were about 300 meters from the border fence between Gaza and Israel.
The workers were collecting rubble in the destroyed industrial zone near Erez crossing, which is located at the edge of the so-called “access restricted area” (also called “ security buffer zone”), northwest of Beit Hanoun, North Gaza district.
No casualties or injuries were reported but the workers abandoned the place.
These workers collect the remaining stones in damaged industrial areas in order to sell them to stone factories, which then sell the recycled rubble at low prices.
Dozens of workers had been arrested and/or injured by the IOF, and some were killed during the past few years.
