Short Link:
At 4:30pm on Friday, 17 August 2018, Israeli forces located near the separation fence to the east of Burij refugee camp in the Middle Area district opened fire and launched tear gas canisters against hundreds of Palestinians who joined the Great Return March in east Burij. Some demonstrators threw stones at the Israeli forces, which used live ammunition and tear gas canisters to police the demonstrators. Karim Fatayer, 28-year old resident of Deir Al Balah, was killed in Israeli shooting, and 20 demonstrators, of them two children, were injured—19 by live fire or tear gas canisters, including one child. One other child and tens of more demonstrators suffered from breathing difficulties due to Israeli forces’ heavy use of tear gas, and they received the necessary treatment by field-based medical teams. Medical sources reported that casualties ranged in severity from light to serious. The Israeli shooting continued until 8pm on the same day.
