At approximately 7:20pm on Sunday, 20 July 2014, Israeli aircraft fired three missiles targeting the apartment of Hani Mohammed Al Hallaq, 29, which is located on the second floor of the Cordoba Building in the Al Rimal neighbourhood in western Gaza City. Two missiles hit the apartment while the third fell at the entrance of the building. A missile penetrated the floor of the Ammar family’s flat, which is one level below the Al Hallaq's, resulting in the killing of three children from the Ammar family and one child from the Jum'a family who fled the Sheja'iya neighborhood attacks and sought refuge with their extended relatives.
