Short Link:
At approximately 12:05 at night, on Sunday 8 July 2012, a large force, including regular police as well as officers from the Public Investigations department and the Women’s Police, raided the Abu ‘Amrah residential neighborhood (named for the principal family living in the area), located in the vicinity of a cluster of governmental ministries in western Gaza City.
The police surrounded the area, blocking all routes leading in and out, and at around 3:00 am called on all residents living in the 220 homes there to evacuate so that the houses could be demolished.
A large number complied with the order to evacuate, but some families did not, so the police forced them out.
Then a number of bulldozers belonging to the Gaza City municipality and commissioned by the Land Authority arrived on the scene and began leveling operations, which continued until late afternoon the following day.
180 of the houses in the area belong to the Abu ‘Amrah family, while the remainder are inhabited by members of the An-Najjar, Abu Rabee‘, Ad-Dayah, and Abu Hameed families.
