on Tuesday 28 June 2011, Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) opened sporadic fire at a group of 50 Palestinians, four internationals, and some journalists as they were taking part in the weekly demonstration against the “security buffer zone” near the border fence.
The demonstration was organized by the Local Initiative group in Beit Hanoun.
Demonstrators were about 500 meters from the border fence in the Shurrāb family area east of al-Amal neighborhood, south east of Beit Hanoun, when the IOF fired at them.
Nonetheless, the protestors continued their activities.
The demonstration took a new form this time in that the protestors were accompanied by 30 children, who were participating in a summer camp called “Stay Human –Vittorio Arrigoni,” which was organized by the Association of Fursān al-Ghad (Knights of Tomorrow).
The association had made a number of kites with slogans in Hebrew that read “Leave Our County,”“Freedom,” and “No to Occupation.
”
When the firing slowed down, the children and the participants flew the kites in order to position them above the houses of the Israeli town of Sderot, near the border fence to the east of the place of the demonstration.
The children and the protestors then cut the cords of the kites so they would fall down into the Israeli town and convey their messages.
This was not the first time that the has IOF opened fire at protestors taking part in the weekly demonstration against the “security buffer zone.
