Introduction: the applicability of the Covenant
The following report was compiled by Al-Haq, Law in the Service of Man and Al-Mezan, Center for Human Rights in Gaza to provide supplemental information to Israel's second periodic report to the UN Human Rights Committee regarding its fulfillment of its obligations as a signatory to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (the CCPR).
Necessarily this report is not comprehensive, as covering all of the violations of the CCPR currently being committed by Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territories would require a report of more length than is appropriate.
Nevertheless, this report attempts to give an overview of several of the major types of violations that are being committed by Israel, and highlights questions that we believes the Human Rights Committee should put to the Israeli representatives appearing before the Committee in its upcoming session.
Al Mezan calls on the Palestinian Council of Ministers to issue a decree setting the date for local elections in Gaza
Deeply concerned by the continued issuance of death sentences in Gaza, Al Mezan urges the complete abolition of this practice
Al Mezan strongly condemns the police crackdown on peaceful protests in Gaza and assaults on journalists
Al Mezan strongly condemns police attacks on peaceful protesters in Gaza and calls for swift investigation into reported violence
Al Mezan strongly condemns the death of Khan Younis resident and urges local authorities to thoroughly investigate the incident
