Mr.
Kofi Annan
Secretary General of the United Nations
Fax: + 212963-2155 Dear Mr.
Annan: Al Mezan Center for Human Rights sends its sincerest condolences to the United Nations over the death of Mr.
Sergio Vieira De Mello, the United Nations chief envoy to Iraq, and of his many colleagues murdered along with him at the UN Headquarters in Baghdad on Tuesday.
We are deeply saddened by the loss of so many innocent lives, and outraged that people there in the interests of humanitarian aid have met such untimely and brutal deaths.
The Human Rights community worldwide will mourn Mr.
De Mello.
Those in the field of human rights knew Mr.
De Mello as an honest person committed to the principles of international humanitarian law and justice in the world.
His contribution to the peacekeeping missions and in the realm of human rights was greatly valued.
Both his life and death symbolize the need for human rights, respect for international law, and justice.
We view the terror attack in which Mr.
De Mello was killed as a serious attempt to undermine the crucial role of the United Nations in providing humanitarian aid and ending the American and British occupation of Iraq.
Al Mezan condemns the murder of Mr.
De Mello and hopes the perpetrators of this crime are swiftly brought to justice.
