On Wednesday, 18 December 2019, Mr. Kees van Baar, Head of Mission at the Netherlands Representative Office in Ramallah, and Mr. Maurits Oskam, First Secretary of Political Affairs and Human Rights, visited Al Mezan Center for Human Rights in Gaza City and met Mr. Issam Younis, Al Mezan’s Director General.
Mr. Younis discussed with the two diplomats the deteriorating humanitarian and human rights situation in the Gaza Strip mainly resulting from the continued Israeli-imposed closure on the Strip. He emphasized the importance of holding the Israeli authorities accountable for grave violations committed against protected civilians and their properties in the occupied Palestinian territory both protected under in accordance with the rules of international law and the principles of justice.
Mr. Younis also reviewed the most recent developments regarding the Palestinian political division and the critical effects it has on human rights. He stressed that the recent call for elections constitutes an important opportunity for Palestinians to choose their representatives and assert the unity of Palestinian territory. He added in conclusion that the international community must support these elections and ensure that Israel does not disrupt or prevent the democratic process from being held in all parts of the Palestinian territory.
