On 22 February 2004, the Palestinian High Court of Justice announced its decision to issue a final ruling on the case of the decision taken by the Palestinian Monetary Authority to freeze of assets of several Palestinian non-profit, charitable organizations by the Palestinian Monetary Authority.
The Court rejected the General Prosecutor’s request to adjourn the case to provide further evidence for the case, invoking Article 121 of the Palestinian Law of the Regulations of Civil and Commercial Trials which prohibits the adjournment more than one time on similar grounds.
On 24 August, 2003, the Palestinian Monetary Authority issued a unilateral and unjustified decision to freeze the assets of several non-profit, charitable organizations.
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights was requested to represent these organizations in court.
The Center appealed to the Palestinian High Court of Justice to request the cancellation of this decision on grounds that the Palestinian Monetary Authority is not habilitated to take such decisions and that the decision does not have legal grounds.
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights hereby reaffirms its position and calls for cancellation of the decision and for safeguard of the rule of law in Palestine.
