On Sunday, 13 March 2016, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights (Al Mezan) held an awareness-raising workshop entitled: “The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW)” for (42) female law students from the Israa University.
The workshop was attended by: Dr. Alaa Matar, Dean of the faculty of law; Dr. Tariq Al Dirawi; and Nuha Abu Zarifa, Al Mezan’s lawyer. Dr. Al Dirawi opened the workshop by welcoming the participants and speakers. He asserted that this workshop was held on International Women's Day in order to shed light on the realities of Palestinian women, and to raise awareness about women’s rights among the students. In addition, he thanked the Center for organizing these kinds of workshops and hoped for a continued cooperation between Al Mezan and the Israa University.
Directly after, Ms. Nuha Abu Zarifa gave an overview over Al Mezan, their activities, and the role that the organisation plays in protecting and promoting human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt). In addition, she addressed women’s rights as stipulated in CEDAW. The workshop included a positive discussion regarding the realities of women’s rights in the Gaza Strip.
In conclusion, Ms. Abu Zarifa thanked the University for organizing such activity, which helps raise awareness among law students.
