On Sunday, 7 June 2015, the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights opens a specialized training course entitled “Torture and Ill-treatment under Human Rights and International Law… Mechanisms of Monitoring and Documentation”, held at Commodore Hotel west of Gaza City. The training is organized as part of the EU-supported project on combating torture in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt).Twenty-five lawyers participated in the training course. The course provides 30 hours training over a period of five days.
Rami Shaqoura, the project lawyer, opened the course by thanking the participants for their commitment to the course and for their efforts to make it a success. He presented the schedule of the course and its aim. He then emphasized the importance of understanding and distributing the culture of human rights, International Humanitarian Law (IHL), Convention against torture, and physical and psychological effects of torture particularly amidst ongoing Israeli violations against civilians in the Gaza Strip and the almost daily arrest of fishermen and travellers at Erez crossing.
The participants will be introduced to International Bill of Human Rights; torture under international humanitarian law, human rights law, and the international criminal law; Convention against torture and its optional protocol; the role of health professionals in detecting and combating torture; regional, national, and international redress for the victims of torture.
The training is part of a project that aims at combating torture and cruel, inhumane, and degrading treatment. It also aims to introduce the participants to mechanisms of monitoring and documentation.
