According to the rulings issued by Palestinian courts of law, local elections are to be held tomorrow, Wednesday 1 June 2005, in part of the Rafah, Bureij and Beit Lahia centers which had been annulled by these courts.
In a press conference held by Hamas spokesperson, Samy Abu Zohry in Gaza today, Movement announced that its blocs would not participate in the repeated elections, and that it would not recognize their results.
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights highlights the importance of respect of the judiciary rulings, especially since appealing against the results of elections before a court of law is a right ensured by the law.
The Center calls upon all the candidates and blocs to run for offices in the repeated elections and to reinforce their monitoring on them to ensure integrity and fairness.
Al Mezan also calls on the Higher Election Commission to ensure adequate legal, technical and logistic conditions necessary to run fair, transparent and free elections.
The Center believe that the deficiencies the second phase of local elections witnessed should further the Palestinian community’s democratic experience toward preventing breaches of the electoral law in the coming elections, especially the legislative elections which are expected to be held soon.
