Al Mezan Opens Training Course on the Protection of Journalists in Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law

On Tuesday, 2 June 2015, the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights launched a training course entitled: “Protection of Journalists in Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (IHL)”. Twenty-five journalists participated in the course, which was held at Al Mezan’s office in Rafah.

 

Mohammed Abdullah, Al Mezan’s field worker in Rafah, opened the course by thanking the participants, the Southern Journalists Forum, and Smart Media for Media Services for their efforts to make the course a success. He hoped the participants would use the newly acquired knowledge in their work.

 

The course consists of 15 training hours to be delivered over three days.
The participants are to be introduced to the principles of human rights; IHL; the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights; the Fourth Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilians; mechanisms of monitoring and documenting of human rights violations (theoretical and practical); and the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1612.

 

The training course is part of Al Mezan’s core program, which aims to enhance the protection and promotion of human rights and the principles of IHL in Gaza and to enable journalists in particular to make use of this body of laws in their legal and judicial focus.
