IOF Commits more Grave Violations of International Law by Targeting Civilian Objects in Gaza Al Mezan: 2,127 Killed; 512 Children and 293 Women since 7 July

The Israeli occupation forces (IOF) escalated its attacks on civilian structures in the Gaza Strip.
The 24-hour reporting period saw a serious increase in IOF attacks on houses and tall buildings.
One attack brought down a 13-story apartment building hosting 44 apartments without giving any specific explanation that can be verified.
This building is located in Tel Al Hawa neighborhood.
Al Mezan's investigations indicate that no military activities took place in or around it.
Hundreds of its residents; most of whom are families headed by employees of the Palestinian Authority, were displaced.
The IOF also destroyed a large shopping mall in Rafah and caused damages to dozens of homes in the Rafah refugee camp.
The number of Palestinian civilians returning to shelters designated for internally displaced people (IDPs); especially in UN schools, continued to increase, with the shelters getting more and more crowded every day.
There is about 450,000 IDPs in the Gaza Strip now.
The humanitarian conditions for the general population, and especially for displaced people, are still difficult in Gaza under the prolonged blackouts and shortages in water supplies.
Food availability is decreasing as agricultural land and poultry and livestock farms are either targeted or inaccessible.
Reports about thousands of tons having been dropped on the Gaza Strip, with unidentified munitions that could cause harm to the environment and food security are of concern.
The verification indicates that as of 12 pm today, Sunday 24 August 2014, at least 2,127 Palestinians have been killed by the IOF since 7 July 2014.
Of them 512 are children and 293 women.
It should be noted that the number of children has increased following the versification of the dates of birth of a group of teenagers, who were verified as under 18s.
These figures also do include seven casualties who were buried without being identified in Rafah.
According to Al Mezan's investigations 1,637 (i.
e.
77%) of the victims are civilians.
At least 983 people; including 320 children and 209 women, were killed inside their houses; and two other disabled women were killed in an attack on a rehabilitation NGO's office.
Another 231 people were killed in the vicinity of their houses; including in situations where they were trying to flee from their homes as a result of IOF attacks.
Moreover, at least 10,640 people were injured during the same period according to the Ministry of Health; including 3,320 were children and 2,063 women.
At least, 10,477 houses were destroyed or damaged during this period; of which 2,686 were destroyed completely.
The IOF directly and deliberately attacked 1,008 of the total number of damaged houses.
As of today, IOF attacks have destroyed or damaged 92 schools, 154 mosques, 8 hospitals; 6 of which are out of service, 43 NGO offices, 50 fishing boats, and 233 vehicles.
North Gaza district: During the 24-hour reporting period between 12pm on Saturday 23 August 2014 and 12 pm today, Sunday 24 August 2014, the IOF fired about 33 missiles on various areas across the North Gaza district.
Some of these attacks targeted agricultural land that belongs to the Jneed, Abu Hmeeda, Abu Shbak, Warsh-Agha, and Al Keelani families.
One attack targeted a small agricultural store owned by Atta Jabr Al Basyouni in Beit Hanoun, and destroyed it completely.
Another attack targeted a training site for Palestinian armed resistance groups.
IOF also targeted four houses owned by Abdel Raheem Rihan Jabalia; Awad Nabhan in Jabalia; Alaa' Jodeh in Jablia; and Mohammed Zein-Addin in the Shiekh Zayid atown in Beit Lahiya.
Two of these houses were completely destroyed and the other two sustained severe damages.
The bombardment of these targets damaged 15 other houses and injured 13 people, including four children and five women.
A mosque and a sports club building were also damaged.
At approximately 4:25 pm on Saturday 23 August 2014, IOF aircraft fired a missile at a field owned by the Warsh-Agha family in the Al Manshiyeh neighborhood in Beit Lahiya town.
A woman and a girl were injured: Nahla Saleh Warsh-Agha, 29; and Ghazal Mohammed Warsh-Agha, 5.
Four neighboring houses were also damaged.
At approximately 5 am on Sunday 24 August 2014, IOF aircraft fired two missiles at the lawn field at the Beit Lahiya Youth Sports Club, which is located in the Al Manshiyeh neighborhood in Beit Lahiya town.
The field was severely damaged and the club's building and fans areas were damaged.
Two persons were also injured in this attack: Mustafa Ishtiwi, 63; and Mustafa Abu Samra, 29.
Four neighboring houses were also damaged.
At approximately 4:50 am on Sunday 24 August 2014, IOF aircraft fired two missiles at a field owned by the Al Keelani family; also located in the Al Manshiyeh neighborhood in Beit Lahiya town.
One woman, Heba Zaki I'layan, 34, was injured and three neighboring houses were damaged.
Gaza City: At 7:00 pm on Saturday 23 August 2014, IOF aircraft bombarded the Al Zafer apartment building number 4, which is located in the Tel Al Hawa neighborhood, west of Gaza City.
The 13-story building was leveled to the ground as a result of the attack.
About 40 families comprised of 240 members lived in the building.
At approximately 9:00 pm on Saturday 23 August 2014, IOF aircraft fired one missile at a car that was driving on at the Al Nasr Street, west of Gaza City.
One person Mahmoud Abu Al Amrein, 28, was killed in the attack.
At approximately 4:30 am on Sunday, 24 August 2014, IOF aircraft fired one missile at two people driving a motorcycle near the Al Mashtal neighborhood, west of Gaza City.
One of them was a child.
They were both instantly killed.
Their names are Yihya Abu Al Amrein, 18, and Badr Abu Mnei’, 17.
At approximately 6 am on Sunday, 24 August 2014, IOF aircraft fired two missiles at a house belonging to Nasr Al Bawab, 62, located in the Al Nasser neighborhood, west of Gaza City.
Six families comprised of 65 members including 30 children lived in the six-story house.
It was completely destroyed in the attack.
At approximately 6 am on Sunday 24 August 2014, IOF aircraft fired two missiles at a house belonging to Ibrahim Al Ghalayeeni, west of Gaza City.
Five families comprised of 35 members including 20 children lived in the three-story house.
It was completely destroyed in the attack.
At approximately 11:50 am on Sunday 24 August 2014, IOF aircraft fired a missile at an open field next to the Isleem factory in Al Yarmouk neighborhood in central Gaza City.
Two children living in a neighboring house were killed inside their homes.
A number of neighboring houses were also severely damaged.
The children’s names are Zeinab Abu Taqiyya, 1.
5, and Mohammed Al Khudari, 16.
Middle Gaza district: In the middle of Gaza district, IOF warplanes and its artillery targeted different areas, including houses and open areas.
At least 25 airstrikes were launched on the district during the reporting period.
As a result, four people were confirmed killed; including a child and two women, and a fifth person is believed to be killed pending verification following recovering him from under the rubble.
Another 27 people were injured including 10 children and 7 women.
At approximately, 12:00 pm, on Saturday, 23 August 2014, Palestinian rescue teams recovered the dead bodies of Mohammed Al Ejlah, 64.
According to Al Mezan's initial investigation, the man was killed from a heavy bullet to his abdomen.
The type of bullet he was killed from is usually fired by Israeli tanks and watchtowers on the eastern border; not far from where he was found.
Al Mezan also found out that the man was from Gaza City and was suffering from mental disability.
At approximately 2 pm on Saturday 23 August 2014, IOF aircraft fired one missile at a house belonging to Abdul Jawad Mheesin, 67, which is located behind the Yafa Hospital in Deir Al Balah town.
Ten families comprised of 70 members lived in the four-story house which was completely destroyed in the attack.
An IOF drone fired a missile at the house seven minutes prior to this attack.
Three people were killed in this attack: Suheir Abu Meddin, 43, Nisreen Ahmad, 38, and Hussein Ahmad, 8 years.
Suheir and her aged parents have been renting an apartment on the third floor in the targeted house ever since they had to evacuate their house in the east of Al Buriej camp.
Their neighbors helped her get her old parents down the stairs and they made it out of the house.
Suheir returned to the house to pick up personal belongings; however, the heavy bombing occurred when she was inside the house, and she was killed.
Her body was recovered from under the rubble of the house.
The bombing also destroyed the next door house, which is owned by Khalid Hussein Ahmed, 43.
Khalid's wife, Nisreen Abu Jayyab, 38; and son, Hussein, 8, were killed.
According to Khalid, the IOF called a neighbor and informed him that a four-story building would be targeted without specifying which building.
The residents of the area didn’t expect that it would be his neighbors' building.
Khalid was outside of his house.
He called his wife and she told him that the bombing was not expected to be near them.
However, Khalid received a phone call from one of his neighbors informing him that a missile attack occurred just near his house.
He rushed back to his house to evacuate his family.
Once he entered his house, he shouted asking his wife and children to leave.
They started to move to leave the house.
At that moment, Khalid heard a very loud explosion and was injured from debris in his head.
He said he could only hear the voice of his daughter, Mona, 8, who is the twin of his son, Hussein.
She was screaming from among the rubble.
Neighbors carried Khalid and his daughter to the hospital, where he was informed that his wife and son were killed.
At approximately 2:00 pm on Saturday 23 August 2014, IOF aircraft fired a missile at a house belonging to Samir Abu 'Armana, 48.
Four families comprised of 18 members lived in the house, which was completely destroyed.
At approximately 3:15 am on Sunday 24 August 2014, IOF aircraft fired a missile at a house belonging to Khamees Nofal, south of Deir Al Balah town.
Four families of 13 members lived in the three-story house, which was completely destroyed.
At approximately 11:00 am on Sunday 24 August 2014, IOF aircraft fired a missile at a house under construction belonging to Osama Abu Samra, 46.
The two-story house is located in Deir Al Balah town.
One person is believed to have been killed in the attack.
His body hasn’t yet been recovered from under the rubble when this press release was published.
Eight other persons who live in adjacent houses were injured, including 3 women and one child.
Two passersby were also injured.
The house was completely destroyed as a result of the attack.
Khan Younis district: In Khan Younis district the IOF launched 16 airstrikes on various areas, mostly on open fields and houses.
These attacks injured three persons.
One person was announced death from a previous injury in an IOF attack on his house in the AL Qarara town, northeast of Khan Younis.
Two houses were also completely destroyed after the IOF directly bombarded them, which caused severe damages to neighboring houses and shops.
At approximately 12:50 pm on Saturday 23 August 2014, IOF aircraft bombarded a house which belongs to Ibrahim Al Farra and his brothers.
Three families comprised of 15 members lived in this three-story house, which is located in Khan Younis city.
The house was hit with three missiles and was completely destroyed.
Several adjacent houses were partially damaged, and two persons were injured.
At approximately 3 pm on Saturday 23 August 2014, medical sources in Khan Younis announced the death of Salah Jom'a Saleem, 26, in an Egyptian hospital.
Saleem was critically injured in an attack on his family house in the Al Qarara town on 2 August 2014.
Two of his family members were also killed in the attack and five others were injured.
At approximately 7:35 pm on Saturday 23 August 2014, IOF artillery positioned beyond the separation fence east to Khan Younis fired several shells and smoke bombs.
The bombs targeted the Abu Reida family house, east of Khuza'a causing damages to a number of adjacent houses.
No injuries or casualties were reported.
Rafah district: The IOF launched 37 airstrikes on Rafah district during the reporting period.
IOF artillery intermittently fired shells in the eastern parts of the town.
The airstrikes targeted a shopping mall, houses, a mosque, empty areas and fields, and the border area between Gaza and Egypt.
The IOF dropped leaflets on Rafah in which it threatened further attacks.
At least 17 people were injured, including nine children and four women.
Three houses and a mosque were destroyed, and a shopping mall was severely damaged.
On Saturday 23 August 2014, IOF aircraft dropped boxes of leaflets on Rafah; instructing people to leave 'any areas from which attacks on Israel are launched' and threatening further attacks, including on houses.
One of the boxes fell on the house of Khamees Al Hams, which is located in the Tel As Sultan neighborhood, west of Rafah, and caused partial damages to the house.
At approximately12 pm on Saturday 23 August 2014, IOF aircraft fired a missile at the house of Ali Nassar, which is located in Rafah refugee camp.
The four-story house, which hosts seven families of 28 members, was destroyed completely.
Al Mezan's investigation revealed that the same house was attacked with a drone missile about five minutes before it was destroyed completely.
The house hosts a small mosque in its ground floor, and it was destroyed with the house.
Another 14 houses were damaged and one women was injured.
At approximately 3:20 pm on Saturday 23 August 2014, IOF aircraft fired a missile at the house of Mousa Al 'Arja, which I located in the east of Rafah and destroyed it completely.
An IOF drone had fired a missile at the house five minutes prior to this attack.
Several neighboring houses were damaged and at least two people were injured.
At approximately 3:55 pm on Saturday 23 August 2014, IOF aircraft fired a missile at a field in the northeast of Rafah; injuring six civilians.
Starting at approximately 11 pm on Saturday 23 August 2014, IOF aircraft fired seven missiles at a shopping mall in the Center of the Rafah refugee camp.
The building was severely damaged and its vicinity sustained much damage; including houses, commercial stores and two schools; one of which is an UNRWA school that was turned shelter.
This school was evacuated to another shelter.
Nine people were injured, including two women and two children.
The mall, which is managed by the Rafah Municipality, is built on an area of 3,000 square meters and hosts small companies, legal practices, medical practices, one wedding hall, a restaurant, and 47 commercial stores; many of which sell gold.
At approximately 11:15 pm on Saturday 23 August 2014, IOF aircraft fired two missiles at the roof of the Zoroub apartment building, which is located next to the shopping mall in Rafah's center.
The building was partially damaged, as a result.
Al Mezan condemns IOF's attacks on civilians and civilian targets in the Gaza Strip.
Attacks on protected civilians and civilian objects that fail to comply with the rules of international humanitarian law (IHL) represent grave breaches of IHL, which amount to war crimes.
These violations must be credibly and promptly investigated and prosecuted.
The international community has an obligation to condemn these violations and make swift, effective interventions to bring them to a halt.
Al Mezan condemns the IOF attacks on a large apartment buildings and a shopping center, which indicate a serious escalation of IOF attacks, carried out under false pretexts that cannot be verified.
The IOF must prove that these structures were used for military purposes.
If so, the attacks must be proportionate and effective warning must be given to civilians; neither of which was given appropriately.
Al Mezan deplores the failure of international community to ensure the protection of the civilian population and the civilian infrastructure in the Gaza Strip, which have been devastated due to thousands of IOF unlawful military attacks that did not respect the basic principles of IHL.
International community must provide the civilian population in the Gaza Strip with humanitarian aid and ensure free and timely passage of materials and personnel needed to re-establish the basic needs for human life; including power, water, sanitation and the health sector.
