Israeli occupying forces continued its attacks against Palestinians in Gaza particularly in the ARA.
Between Friday and Sunday, 20 and 22 December 2013, Israeli forces killed one Palestinian and injured seven; four of them sustained critical injuries.
The Palestinians were injured while they were near the fence between the Gaza Strip and Israel.
Israeli occupying forces also opened fire at Palestinian fishermen in three separate incidents but no casualties or injuries were reported.
According to Al Mezan’s field documentation, at approximately 2:30 pm on Friday, 20 December 2013, Israeli forces opened fire at Oda Jehad Oda Hamad, 27, who was with his brother Raddad, 22, at the solid waste dump near the fence between the Gaza Strip and Israel, north of Beit Hanoun.
At approximately 3:40 pm on the same day, the Israeli forces allowed an ambulance from the Palestinian Red Crescent Society to enter the area, after coordination was secured between the International Committee of the Red Cross and Israeli authorities.
Medical sources at Beit Hanoun Hospital cited the death of Oda from an injured sustained from a bullet that penetrated his forehead and exited from the back of his head.
At approximately 1:30 pm on the same day, Israeli occupying forces opened fire at a group of young Palestinian men who were near the Islamic cemetery east of Jabaliya in the North Gaza district.
Two men and a child from Jabaliya refugee camp were injured.
Al Mezan identified their names as follows: Deyaa’ An-Natoor, 17, who sustained a bullet wound in his left leg; Ali Khalil, 20, who sustained a bullet wound in his left thigh; and Mohammed Ayyob, 23, who sustained a bullet wound in his right leg, which caused a fracture.
Medical sources at Kamal Odwan Hospital described the injury of the first two persons as minor with the third person sustaining a moderate injury.
At approximately 2:30 pm on the same day, Israeli forces opened fire at a group of Palestinian men who were gathering at an agricultural field near the cemetery in Qdeeh neighborhood, approximately 500 meters away from the fence, east of Khuza’a, east of Khan Younis.
As a result, two persons were injured.
At approximately 7:00 pm on Saturday, 21 December 2013, Israeli forces opened fire at a group of Palestinian men who were gathering at an agricultural field near the cemetery in An-Najjar neighborhood, approximately 600 meters away from the fence, east of Khuza’a, east of Khan Younis.
As a result, one person was injured.
At approximately 9:45 am on Sunday, 22 December 2013, Israeli gunboats opened fire at a number of Palestinian fishermen who were throwing their fishing nets off the coast of Beit Lahiya in the North Gaza district.
According to Al Mezan’s field investigations, a group of Israeli soldiers chased the fishermen, who managed to return to shore unharmed.
No casualties or injuries were reported.
It’s worth noting that some fishermen who do not own fishing boats go to areas close to the fence and throw their nets as the area is rocky and fish gather there.
At approximately 5:30 pm and 9:30 pm on Friday and Saturday 20 and 21 December 2013, Israeli gunboats opened fire at Palestinian fishing boats, which were in the Gaza sea north and west of Al Waha resort, near the maritime border, west of Beit Lahiya, in the North Gaza district.
No casualties or injuries were reported.
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights condemns the Israeli attacks against Palestinian farmers and fishermen.
Al Mezan warns of the human rights implications for Palestinian civilians which emanate from Israel's attempts to enforce the ARA inside the Gaza Strip.
Therefore, Al Mezan calls on the international community, particularly the High Contracting Parties to the Geneva Convention, to promptly intervene to end the Israeli violations, to uphold its moral and legal obligations and to provide protection for Palestinian civilians while ensuring the respect of international law.
