Israeli forces continue to use live ammunition against Palestinians in the Access Restricted Areas (ARA)
Israeli attacks against Palestinians show Israel’s systematic violations of international law
Al Mezan calls on the international community to promptly intervene
According to field investigations by Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, at approximately 11:30 am on Sunday, August 11, 2013, Israeli forces opened fire at Palestinian farmers who were approximately 400 meters away from the separation fence between Gaza Strip and Israel, east of Al Sheja’iya neighborhood, east of Gaza City.
As a result, Hamada Samir Jendiya, 21, was injured.
In his affidavit to Al Mezan, Hamada stated: “I went to work on my uncle’s land along with three other farmers.
Ten minutes later, I heard firing and felt pain in my left leg and fell on the ground.
I fainted and when I woke up I found myself in Shifa hospital.
I received medical treatment and left the hospital at 6:00 pm on the same day.
” In a separate incident at approximately 8:20 pm on Saturday, August 10, 2013, Israeli forces opened fire at and killed Hussein Abdel Hadi ‘Awadallah (An-Nouri), 34, who was trying to cross the separation fence between the Gaza Strip and Israel, east of Al Bureij refugee camp.
At approximately 3:00 am on Sunday, August 11, 2013, the Israeli forces transferred the body to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
The body was admitted to Shifa Hospital in Gaza where it reported that An-Nouri sustained a bullet wound to the left shoulder; the bullet was then lodged in his abdomen.
According to An-Nouri’s relatives, Hussein left his house, which is located in An-Nussierat refugee camp at around 7:30 pm on Saturday, August 10, 2013 and did not come back.
At approximately 9:00 am the next day, they received a phone call from their friends informing them that Hussein’s body was in the morgue.
An-Nouri’s relatives did not know why he went to the separation fence.
Al Mezan reiterates its condemnation of the Israeli use of force on civilians in the ARA and on the measures taken to prevent Palestinians from reaching their lands in the area.
These attacks amount to systematic violations of the right to life and the right to livelihood as stipulated under international law.
Therefore, Al Mezan reiterates its previous calls on the international community to promptly intervene in order to end the violations.
Al Mezan asserts that the Gaza Strip is part of the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) and the dual agreements between the Israeli authorities and Palestinian bodies under regional and international sponsorship, including Oslo Accords, do not exempt the Israeli forces from its obligation under international law.
Under international law, Israel is obliged to respect human rights and humanitarian principals in respect to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip as part of the oPt.
