Protests against UNRWA Convoy in Jabalyia Refugee Camp

At approximately 10:30 am on Monday 25 March 2013, dozens of Palestinian refugees blocked the convoy of Mr.
Robert Kerner, director of UNRWA operations in Gaza, as he was visiting the house of the assigned notable of Jabaliya Mr.
Anwar Okasha which is located in Block 1 in Jablaiya refugee camp.
They blocked his convoy in protest against decreasing UNRWA’s relief services provided for Palestinian refugees.
According to Al Mezan’s field investigations, in the morning hours on the same day, dozens of Palestinian men sat fire to car tries in front of UNRWA’s building which is located near Women's Activity Center in Jabalyia refugee camp.
The protestors then followed Mr.
Kerner’s convoy to the house of Mr.
Okasha and prevented him from going out of the house for approximately an hour and a half.
This protest was organized by the Popular Committee for Refugees against UNRWA’s new policy towards Palestinian refugees.
UNRWA decided to stop financial aid for families who benefit from social security net.
These families receive 40 ILS for each family member every three months.
In its new policy, UNRWA will also equals between food aid received by these families and coupons received by poor families within food emergency program.
