IOF Releases 15 Palestinian Fishermen, Al Mezan Condemns Continuous Israeli Violations and Calls on International Community to End Blockade on Gaza

On Thursday 29 November 2012, Israeli naval vessels patrolling the Gaza sea opened fire at Palestinian fishing boats off the coast opposite Al Waha resort, northwest of Beit Lahiya, North Gaza.
  According to Al Mezan’s field investigation, the IOF ships surrounded one Palestinian fishing boat, opened fire at it, before they forced six fishermen to take off their clothes and swim towards them.
Al Mezan has identified the names of fishermen as follows: IhabJawad Baker, 36; Mohammed Ziyad Baker, 32; Ali Alaa’ Baker, 18; FahedZiyad Baker, 38; His sons Ziyad, 18; and Na’em 16.
Two hours later, the IOF released all detained fishermen and returned their boat to them after they had been damaged.
In their affidavits to Al Mezan, fishermen in the area who witnessed the incident stated that the arrested fishermen were still within six nautical miles’ distance which they have been allowed to fish in following the last cease fire agreement.
Similarly, at approximately 11:00 am on Wednesday, 28 November 2012, Israeli naval vessels patrolling the Gaza Sea opened fire at Palestinian fishing boats off the coast, six nautical miles away from Gaza harbor.
According to Al Mezan’s field investigation, the IOF ships surrounded one Palestinian fishing boat, opened fire at the boat, and then forced three fishermen to take off their clothes and swim towards them.
The IOF arrested Fadi Suhail Baker, 22; his brothers Mohammed and Khalid (18 and 20 respectively).
The fishermen live in Ash-Shate’ refugee camp.
In the same context, at approximately 10:30 am on the same day, Israeli naval vessels patrolling the Gaza sea opened heavy fire at Palestinian fishing boats off the coast,eight nautical miles away from Gaza harbor.
According to Al Mezan’s field investigation, the IOF ships surrounded one Palestinian fishing boat, opened fire at the boat, and then forced five fishermen to take off their clothes and swim towards them.
Al Mezan has identified the names of fishermen, who are residents of western Remal neighborhood, as follows: Rajab Rashad Al Hissi, 35; Sameh Mahmoud Al Hissi, 34; Ahmed Murad Al Hissi, 30; Murad Mohammed Al Hissi, 18; and Mohammed Murad Al Hissi, 40.
   At approximately 11:00 am on the same day, Israeli naval vessels patrolling the Gaza sea opened heavy fire at Palestinian fishing boats off the coast,six nautical miles away from Gaza harbor.
The IOF arrested Khader Jamal Baker, 20, from Ash-Shate’ refugee camp and took him to an unknown destination.
At approximately 1:30 pm on the same day, IOF opened direct fire at a Palestinian boat, belonging to Mohammed Najeeb Omar Baker, 60, which was sailing within about six nautical miles away from Gaza harbor.
At approximately 1:00 pm on the same day, IOF opened fire directly at a Palestinian boat owned by Tal’at Kamel Baker, 22, opposite Al Waha resort northwest of BeitLahiya in North Gaza district which led fishermen to leave the area driving their boats back to the shore.
Al Mezan expresses its strong condemnation of Israel’s grave and systematic violations of the rights of Palestinian fishermen.
  Al Mezan considers Israel’s imposture of a no-go line on Palestinian fishermen  and the ongoing maritime siege as part of its policy of collective punishment imposed on the Gaza Strip.
  Al Mezan asserts that the silence of the international community towards the Israeli violations in Gaza Strip has encouraged Israel to commit more violations and has tightened its blockade of Gaza.
Therefore, Al Mezan reiterates its previous call on the international community to promptly intervene in order to uphold its obligations and abide by its commitments under international law and the Fourth Geneva Convention Relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War, and to ensure full respect for the principles of international humanitarian law at all times and calls on the international community to take all necessary measures to end Israel’s gross violations of human rights and to bring the perpetrators of crimes to justice.
