On Thursday 13 September 2012, the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights in cooperation with Friedrich Ebert Foundationorganized a training workshop entitled “Promotion and Protection Mechanismsof Economic, Social and Cultural Rights,” held at Carino’s restaurant in Gaza City.
About 40 UNRWA teachers of human rights attended the workshop.
Mrs.
Shirin Ash-Shobaki, Coordinator of Training and Mass Communication Unit at Al Mezan, opened the workshop by thanking the participants for their attendance and interest in the course.
She emphasized the importance of the workshop and its content aimed atthe dissemination of human rights’ values and concepts across the spectrum of the Palestinian society.
She also presented the schedule of the workshop and its aim.
She talked about Al Mezan’s role in the protection and defense of human rights in the Gaza Strip.
She illustrated the roleof Al Mezan’s units in helping victims of human rights violations.
The workshop lasted for seven hoursand took place over two sessions.
Judge Zaher As-Saqqa presented the first session of the workshop which was an introduction to economic, social and cultural rights and protection mechanisms with the right to education used as a case study.
The second session was led by Dr.
Iyad Naser andtackled economic, social and cultural rights under both International Human Rights Law (IHRL) and International Humanitarian Law (IHL), both of which provide a set of provisions, norms, and protection mechanisms, especially in complicated situations such as those of prolonged occupationas is the case in the occupied Palestinian territory.
The workshop is part of a larger program entitled “Enhancing Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights,” implemented by Al Mezan in cooperation with Friedrich Ebert Foundation.
