Al Mezan Opens Training Course for Lawyers Entitled “Developing Lawyers’ Skills in Providing Legal Aid for Victims of Human Rights Abuses”

On Sunday 25 December 2011, the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights opened a training course titled “Developing Lawyers’ Skills in Providing Legal Aid for Victims of Human Rights Abuses,” held at As-Salam restaurant in Gaza City.
 This course constitutes one component of the “Enhancing Legal Aid for Victims of Human Rights Violations in Gaza Strip” project, implemented by Al Mezan with support from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP/PAPP, Rule of Law Program).
  Mr.
Samir Zaqout, the field work unit coordinator at Al Mezan, opened the course by welcoming the participants and thanking them for their effort in attending the course despite the bad weather.
 Mr.
Zaqout asserted the importance of the course for lawyers, who play a vital role in defending victims of human rights violations.
 He emphasized that the course aims to enhance lawyers’ skills and knowledge in providing legal advice for victims of human rights violations.
  The course consists of 30 training hours to be delivered over five days.
 Participants will be introduced to several important topics related to human rights, Palestinian law, international principles, monitoring and reporting mechanisms, and provision of legal advice for victims of human rights abuses.
  A team of specialized experts will present the course materials.
