On Saturday 17 December 2011, the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights organized two training workshops for members of local councils and parents in Gaza City and Rafah, entitled “Child Rights - Protection and 1612 Monitoring and Reporting Mechanisms” (MRM).
The workshops are part of a project titled “Promotion of 1612 MRM” (referring to UN Security Council resolution 1612 on protection of children) supported by Save the Children – UK.
  Mrs.
Shirin Ash-Shobaki, coordinator of the training and mass communication unit at Al Mezan, opened the first workshop by welcoming the 18 participants at Laterna restaurant in Gaza City.
  Mr.
Ghareeb As-Senwar, Al Mezan’s field worker in Khan Younis, opened the second workshop by welcoming the 16 participants at the Happy City hall in Rafah.
  Mrs.
Ash-Shobaki and Mr.
As-Senwar presented the participants with a brief summary of Al Mezan’s work and the 1612 MRM project, and expressed their hope that the participants would pass on their newly acquired knowledge to others.
Each workshop consists of 15 hours delivered over two consecutive days.
The participants will be introduced to the Convention on the Rights of the Child; child rights protection mechanisms and related UN resolutions; the legal imperative to protect women and children in armed conflicts; and the 1612 MRM concerning violations of child rights in situations of armed conflict.
