IOF Deliberately Attacks Palestinian Civilians and Civilian Objects and Escalates Its Attacks on the Gaza Strip

For Immediate Release Time: 2:00 pm, Gaza   The Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) have continued to escalate their aggression against the Gaza Strip with premeditated attacks against civilians and civilian objects.
Between 4:00 pm on Friday 19 August 2011 and 2:00 pm on Saturday 20 August 2011, the IOF launched 13 airstrikes and artillery attacks on various targets in the Gaza Strip.
As a result of these attacks, six persons were killed, including two children, raising the death toll to 15, including three children.
About 44 persons, including eight children and two women, were also injured.
  The Al Mezan Center for Human Rights has followed developments and provides details on the Israeli attacks as follows:   ·         At approximately 10:15 am on Saturday 20 August 2011, an Israeli drone attacked a group of Palestinian men who were near Hammouda Gas Station in the town of Beit Lahiya, in North Gaza district.
As a result, one person sustained critical injuries and was admitted to Kamal Odwan Hospital in North Gaza district.
  ·         At approximately 3:30 am on Saturday 20 August 2011, an Israeli aircraft fired a missile at an open agricultural field east of Al Qarrara village in the south of Gaza.
No casualties or injuries were reported.
  ·         At around midnight of the same day, an Israeli aircraft fired a missile at an open field in the Zalatta area in Ash-Shoka village, east of Rafah.
As a result, Anwar Younis Sheikh Al Eid, 26, sustained shrapnel wounds in different parts of his body.
He was admitted to Abu Yousif An-Najjar Hospital, where his injury was described as moderate.
  ·         At approximately 10:50 pm on Friday 19 August 2011, an Israeli aircraft fired a missile at a motorcycle on Ath-Thalatheeni street, at the junction with Al Mughrabi street, in the As-Sabra neighborhood, south of Gaza City.
As a result, three persons on the motorcycle were killed.
Al Mezan has identified them as follows:   ·         Dr.
Munthir Basem Ahmed Qreeqe’, 31; ·         his brother Mu’taz Basem Hamdan Qreeqe’, 29; ·         and his son, Islam Mu’taz Basem Qreeqe’, 2.
  Five persons who were at the site of the attack by chance were also injured; including one woman.
Al Mezan has identified them as follows:   ·         Suzan Saleh Al Shurafa, 35; ·         Ahmed Shu’ayb Al Kolak, 25; ·         Mohammed Marwan Ad-Dairi, 26; ·         Dr.
Tareq Omar Othman Kuhail, 46; and ·         Nader Samer Yousif Jarada, 28.
  A white Hyundai car of 1999 make belonging to Dr.
Tareq Kuhail was partially damaged in the attack.
Mu’taz Qreeqe’ was known for his affiliation with the Al Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Islamic Jihad movement.
  ·         At approximately 8:40 pm on Friday 19 August 2011, Israeli aircraft fired two missiles at a motorcycle that was moving on the street connecting Al Bureij and Al Maghazi refugee camps, parallel to the central Salah Ad-Din street, south of Al Bureij refugee camp.
As a result, two persons were killed.
Al Mezan identified them as follows:   ·         Imad Fareed Abu ‘Abda, 23, and ·         Anwar Hasan Abu ‘Abda, 23.
  Both of them were residents of Al Bureij refugee camp.
According to medical sources at Shuhadaa Al Aqsa Hospital in Deir Al Balah, the bodies were dismembered.
  ·         At approximately 11:40 pm on the same day, an Israeli aircraft fired a missile at a training site for the Al Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Hamas movement, east of Az-Zaitoun neighborhood, east of Gaza City.
No casualties or injuries were reported.
  ·         At approximately 8:30 pm on Friday 19 August 2011, an Israeli aircraft fired a missile at a piece of open agricultural land in the Abassan village east of Khan Younis district.
No casualties or injuries were reported.
  ·         At approximately 11:15 pm on Friday 19 August 2011, Israeli aircraft attacked a store owned by Naji Mohammed Ibrahim Abu Zareefa, 50.
As a result, the store was destroyed and an adjacent washhouse and home sustained major damages.
The 150 square meters store is located parallel to the main street in Abassan village, east of Khan Younis.
  ·         At approximately 11:24 pm on Friday 19 August 2011, Israeli aircraft fired two missiles at the house of Hussein An-Najjar, 32, located east of Khuza’a village, east of Khan Younis.
One of the missiles did not explode, while the other hit an adjacent sheep farm belonging to Suliman Mohammed Ishneino.
As a result one sheep was killed.
An-Najjar had received a phone call from the IOF warning him of the attack and ordering him to evacuate his house only five minutes before the strike.
  ·         At approximately 7:10 pm on Friday 19 August 2011, Israeli tanks fired an artillery shell at a group of Palestinians the end of Al Mansoura street, west of Al Muntar (Karni) crossing, east of Gaza City.
No casualties or injuries were reported.
  ·         At approximately 7:00 pm on the same day, an Israeli drone fired a missile at a group of Palestinian men who were near Ar-Rantisi mosque east of Az-Zaitoun neighborhood, east of Gaza city.
No casualties or injuries were reported.
  ·         At approximately 6:00 pm on the same day, an Israeli drone fired a missile at Samed Abdel Mu’ti ‘Abed, 20, as he was driving his motorcycle east of Ash-Sheikh Zayed City, killing him immediately.
  ·         At approximately 5:30 pm on the same day, an Israeli aircraft fired a missile at an open piece of land near the Hassanein family quarry east of Ash-Sheja’iya neighborhood, east of Gaza City.
As a result, the quarry was damaged.
No casualties or injuries were reported.
  ·         At approximately 5:30 pm on the same day, Israeli drones fired two missiles at a group of Palestinians near the Al Wafa Hospital east of Ash-Sheja’iya neighborhood, east of Gaza City.
As a result, two children were injured.
Al Mezan has identified them as follows:   ·         Ibrahim Adnan Abde Rabbo Az-Zaza, 14; and ·         Mohammed ‘Atef Abde Rabbo Az-Zaza, 15.
  The Al Mezan Center for Human Rights reiterates its condemnation of Israel’s escalated aggression against the Gaza Strip.
Al Mezan expresses its concern over this newly escalated aggression, particularly Israel’s disregard for civilians’ lives and the premeditated killing and injuring of civilians.
The Israeli attack against Dr.
Qreeqe’ and his cousin is clear evidence that the IOF premeditatedly attacks civilians and children.
  Al Mezan reiterates its call on the international community to promptly and effectively intervene to end these Israeli violations and crimes and to ensure that Israel respect international humanitarian law, particularly the protection due to civilians and civilian objects.
