The Israeli occupation forces (IOF) escalated its attacks on the Gaza Strip during the past day and raided different areas throughout it.
According to Al Mezan’s field investigations, the IOF used flechette shells against civilian objects, including a house.
Al Mezan condemns the attacks on civilians and their property and the use of flechette bombs in Gaza.
Al Mezan calls on the international community to intervene to ensure respect for international law and provide protection for civilians in Gaza.
At approximately 11:40am on Wednesday 8 December 2010, the IOF fired two artillery shells east of the Al Sheja'iya neighborhood, east of Gaza City.
One of the shells fell in an open area west of Karni crossing.
The second shell fell on a house owned by Mas'oud Abdel Aziz Sha'ban As-Sirsawi, 47.
The two-story house is about 280 square meters and is located at the Al Mansoura street west of Karni crossing in the east of the Al Sheja'iya neighborhood.
The shell that hit the house did not explode, fortunately.
It hit three walls on the second floor.
A police forces arrived at the scene of the attack and reported that the unexploded shell was a flechette.
According to Al Mezan's field information, the house hosts 21 persons; 13 of them are children.
At approximately 2:50am on Thursday 9 December 2010, Israeli aircraft fired a missile at a training site for the Azadin Al-Qasam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas movement.
The training site is located east of Az-Zaytoun neighborhood east of Gaza city.
The Tunis Secondary School for Boys and the Bisan Primary School for Girls, which are close to the site, were damaged from the blast.
The two schools host about 1,380 students.
At approximately 2:45am on Thursday 9 December 2010, Israeli aircraft attacked a house under construction and a water well.
The house is about 180 square meters in area and is owned by Abed-Rabbo Awad Obied, 63.
As a result, the house, the water room, and the Obied family Diwan were destroyed.
No casualties or injuries were reports as the Obied family members live in their adjacent house.
The family, especially children, suffered from panic and shock.
Israeli aircrafts also fired a missile at a training site for the Ezadin Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas movement.
The site is located in the Gaza Valley, southeast of Al Mughraqa village.
The missile fell 60 meters from the village police station, but it did not explode completely.
As A result, the electricity network in the area was damaged and the electricity was cut off in different areas throughout Middle-Gaza district.
The police stopped traffic on the street that leads to the village due to fears that the missle could explode again.
At approximately 1am on Wednesday 8 December 2010, Israeli aircrafts attacked a livestock farm in the Gezan Rashwan neighborhood in Khan Younis district, south of the Gaza Strip.
The area of the tin-roofed farm is about 350 square meters and it belongs to Abdel Kreem Ali Al Majaida, 49.
The farm was completely destroyed and around 2,000 chicks were killed in it as a result of the attack.
An adjacent livestock farm, owned by Mohammed Sa'eed Al Bayouk, 36, was also partially destroyed in this attack.
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights strongly condemns the Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip and the use of flechette bombs in a civilian area.
The use of such bombs causes high numbers of people.
Their use violates the rules of international humanitarian law.
Al Mezan calls on the international community to end its silence and intervene to ensure the due protection for civilians and their property in the Gaza Strip.
Al Mezan emphasizes that the failure of the international community to act on its legal obligations towards pursuing accountability for violations committed against the civilian population in the Gaza Strip in the past has only encouraged Israel to continue to launch similar attacks.
