On Sunday 7 November 2010, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights in coordination with the Jabalia Rehabilitation Association concluded two workshops at the Association office.
The workshops aimed to raise the awareness of a group of persons with special needs in the field of child rights and protection under Palestinian law.
Shirin Al Shobaki, Coordinator of the Training and Mass Communication Unit at Al Mezan, delivered the first workshop, which was on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, on Thursday 4 November 2010.
The second session, which tackled the protection of persons with special needs under Palestinian Law, was held on Sunday.
Suha Abu Z'eiter, a translator at the Association, translated the workshops into sign language.
The workshop introduced the twenty participating children to child rights and protection mechanisms under Palestinian law.
A second workshop consisted of ten hours of training that was delivered over the past three days.
It introduced participants to the historic and legal framework of international humanitarian law (IHL) and international human rights law (IHRL), the basic principles that underlie IHL and IHRL, the international conventions on human rights and the mechanisms under IHRL and Palestinian law to enhance and protect such rights for persons with special needs.
The workshops are part of a series of activities specially designed for the Association’s staff and students that began this month.
