Al Mezan Concludes Specialized Lawyer Training on the Rule of Lawyers in Detecting and Combating Torture in the Gaza Strip

On Tuesday 23 February 2010, Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights concluded a training course on the Rule Rule of Lawyers in Detecting and Combating Torture.
  Twenty-six lawyers participated in the training course.
The training provided course 24 hours over the period of four days .
The course aimed at  introducing participants to: the Convention against Torture, ways of combating torture in the Israeli and Palestinian laws, enhancing  lawyers' skills in monitoring and documenting torture and writing effective reports, ways of detecting the physical signs of torture, and using these documents in pursuing the  perpetrators of torture.
  In addition, the course introduced the participants to human rights law,  international criminal law since  torture is listed in  the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.
  This course constitutes a component of the project entitled ’Combating Torture' implemented by Al Mezan Centre.
The project aims to raise awareness of the Convention against Torture , help the victims who are subject to torture by the Israeli occupation forces, particularly patients, students, detainees, and fishermen in Gaza.
It also seeks to build the capacity of lawyers in monitoring, documenting and filing lawsuits against tortures perpetrators.
  A team of Al Mezan trainers and experts from Palestinian universities and civil society delivered the training.
  At the end of the course, Al Mezan’s director, Mr.
Issam Younis, thanked the participants for their disciplinary manner  and their activities in the course.
He also encouraged the participants to work on combating torture and to defend the victims of human rights violations.
He also emphasized on the lawyer's noble mission in defending the victims.
Younis handed certificates to the participants.
  From their part, participants emphasized on the importance of using all the available capacities to defend the Palestinian victims who suffered violations of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories(OPT).
They also called for enacting local laws that stop practicing torture.
They called for the implementation of UN mechanism and human rights; provide international protection for the Palestinians; international protection for the Palestinian people; pursue the torture perpetrators before the specialized international courts.
They called for international intervention to ensure respect to international law; particularly by the High Contracting Parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention, requesting that they uphold their legal and moral obligations to ensure Israel's compliance to respecting the rules of IHL Ends
