The attack, which started on 1 August 2014, followed an Israeli army directive codenamed "Hannibal Directive", allegedly designed to thwart the capture of Israeli soldiers. Israel had announced that one of its soldiers, 2nd Lt. Hadar Goldin, had been by Palestinian fighters in the morning of 1 August 2014. The artillery barrage and multiple airstrikes killed more 255 Palestinians in four days

The destroyed flat of Bassam Madi, located on the third floor. His mother Zakiya (58) recalls that no ambulance could access them. “I was bleeding but I was looking for my children. We are all tired and homeless. We are tired psychologically. We find it difficult to speak with each other,” she said

The entire immediate family of Bassam was wiped out: Bassam (32), his wife Iman (31), and their two daughters Hala (3) and Jana (2)
