Al Mezan Condemns Israeli Killing of One and Injuring of Seven in ARA

Israeli occupying forces continue attacks against Palestinian civilians in areas near the northern and eastern borders of the Gaza Strip in an attempt to enforce access restricted areas (ARA) along the northern and eastern borders.
Recently, the Israeli forces killed one and injured another seven people in the ARA.
According to Al Mezan’s field investigations, at approximately 3:40 pm on Friday, 24 January 2014, Israeli forces opened fire at a group of young Palestinian men and children who were in Buret Abu Samra, north of Beit Lahiya, in the north of Gaza.
As a result, Belal Ahmed ‘Iwida, 19, was killed.
According to medical sources at Kamal Odwam Hospital, ‘Iwida sustained a bullet in the chest which caused his death.
At approximately 3:00 pm on the same day, Israeli forces fired live ammunition and launched tear gas canisters at tens of young Palestinian men and children who were east of the Islamic Cemetery east of Jabaliya, in northern Gaza.
As a result, seven people were injured including a child.
One of the injured sustained a bullet wound and four others sustained rubber coated steel bullet injuries.
Two were injured due to the inhalation of tear gaz.
Al Mezan has identified the names of the injured people as follows: Mu’az Muneer Abu Ghbaiet, 18, sustained a bullet injury in the right thigh; Abdullah Mohammed ‘Awad, 22, sustained rubber coated steel bullet injury in the right hand causing a fracture; Mohammed Naser Abu Qamar, 18, sustained rubber coated steel bullet injury in the left hand; Salim Nafez Abu ‘Asser, 21, sustained rubber coated steel bullet injury in the right leg; Yihya Mammdouh Al Jammal, 20, sustained rubber coated steel bullet injury in the back; Bahaa Mahmoud Al Madhoun, 17, injury due to inhalation of tear gas; and Nizar Muhei Ad-Deen Zaqout, 22, injury due to inhalation of tear gas.
The Al Mezan Center for Human Rights condemns the Israeli continuous attacks against civilians in areas near the border.
Al Mezan asserts that the Israeli attacks form grave violations of international humanitarian law principles, mainly discrimination, proportionality and military necessity.
They also violate articles (3) and (32) of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which prohibit attacks against life and bodily integrity, especially acts of killing.
Al Mezan calls on States Parties to abide by their obligations as per article (146) of the Fourth Geneva Convention and to exert pressure on Israel in order to cease its attacks against civilians in the Gaza Strip and ensure enforcement of international law and respect for the Fourth Geneva Convention.
